Philology and Archaeology: Dialogue in Crisis

This year’s Rencontre Assyriologique Internationale, to be held in Geneva and Bern (http://rai.unibe.ch), will be followed by a one-day symposium hosted by the Swiss Society for Ancient Near Eastern Studies (www.sgoa.ch) and focusing on the topic “Philology and Archaeology: Dialogue in Crisis”.

The somewhat dramatic title of this symposium aims to draw attention to the urgent need of consolidating within our fields not only academic methodologies but also institutional structures capable of facilitating collaborations between philologists and archaeologists.  A first step in this direction, the symposium will function as a platform to stimulate discussions around the practical questions that are likely to be raised by the broad theme (“Text and Image“) and multidisciplinary implications of the 61 RAI.

The symposium will be held in Bern on Saturday 27 June 2015 at Universität Schanze (UniS), Room A3, from 9:30 until 12:30. The speakers will be Cécile Michel, Johanna Tudeau, Andrew George and Julian Reade. Irene Winter will be moderator.

No fees, no registration required. All attendants are mostly welcome to participate at the discussion!
