The interdisciplinary research project "From the Orient to Rome and back again. Religious flows and the expansion of oriental cults in the Roman Empire" within the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context. Shifting Asymmetries in Cultural Flows" (http://www.vjc.uni-hd.de/) at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg is inviting applications for a Doctoral Stipend in Egyptology.
Within the broader topical and methodological framework of the research project, the successful candidate will carry out independent and original research focusing on the cult of Isis in the Roman Empire. Specific attention should be put on questions of cultural hybridity. While based on the philological analysis of Egyptian, Greek and Latin sources, the resulting study will be informed substantially by both the pertinent archaeological evidence as well as recent theoretical approaches to the concept of the adaptation of "foreign" cults in colonial and post-colonial situations. It is desired that attention will be paid to regional divergencies instead of formulating a single generalised narrative.
The stipend is 1000 € per month and will be awarded for two years with possible renewal for an additional year after a successful review of the first term. Applicants for a doctoral stipend are expected to hold an outstanding university degree in Egyptology (or Classical Studies with Egyptology as second subject). Willingness to engage in joint activities of the interdisciplinary research project as well as good English language proficiency are highly desirable.
In addition to a curriculum vitae, a list of publications (if applicable), copies of academic degree certificates, and one letter of recommendation, applicants should submit a one-page exposé in accordance with the research program outlined above.
Please direct your application by 20 September 2008 to:
