Mivel a sajtóközlemény friss sérülésekről ír, ám a 2004-ben károsodott S-sztélé fotóját hozza illusztráció gyanánt, kétségek merültek fel a hír hitelességét illetően. A kétségeket Barry Kemp, az amarnai ásatások vezetője oszlatta szét az alábbi rövid, ám lényegre törő helyzetjelentéssel:
"The press report seems to be a mixture of information about the destruction of stela S in 2004 (that was reported at the time), and some damage to a largely defaced stela, stela Q, that has happened more recently.
Almost all of the decorated surface of Q was lost in the first half of the 20th century. In the recent damage, the surface of the top of the niche at the left side, that bears no decoration, has come away, presumably by human agency though the reason is not clear. The few remaining fragments of the stela are undamaged as is the statue niche on the right side and the lower part of the statue niche on the left. The stone that has been removed has taken off the top of the projecting stone that is the remnant of the left-hand statue pair."
